Wild Edibles Walk & Workshop - Saturday, May 23rd, 2-5pm

Eat from the land and you will experience the profound delights of wild terroir! There is a unique joy found foraging in your own backyard—knowing how to identify, harvest and prepare these ingredients will exponentially increase your connection to the place you call home.

Join founding naturalist Laura Chávez Silverman along the river to forage for spring plants, including nettle, cattail, knotweed and black locust. We’ll cover best practices for identification and harvesting as we gather ingredients for edible and medicinal preparations. Then we’ll head back to the outpost to spend some time preserving our bounty with simple, time-honored methods. Possible preparations include nettle soup, strawberry-knotweed jam, pickled cattail relish, dryad’s saddle broth and fermented black locust soda. Recipes will be provided so you can take your skills home. Wild snacks will be offered. Space is limited; registration is required.

Location: The Outside Institute’s outpost in Barryville, NY. All details will be emailed directly to participants.

Of note: This is a rain or shine event, unless advance notice is given. Terrain is easy; all ages and abilities are welcome.
